On Wednesday, July 29th, AileyCamp Miami opened its classes up to friends and family of the AileyCampers who are participating in its inaugural summer. AileyCampers excitedly prepared for their special guests who turned out in droves. One hundred fifty eight people, including moms, dads, siblings, grandmothers, aunties, and friends, began the afternoon with a hearty lunch and then took a tour of the AileyCamp Miami classes. Divided up into two groups, visitors were accompanied by AileyCamp staff as they toured the first class accommodations at the Arsht Center that house AileyCamp Miami. Instructors gave brief descriptions of their classes and answered visitor’s questions as students demonstrated newly mastered skills.
Proud parents watched with smiling faces as their middle schoolers performed in Dance Technique classes that included ballet, jazz, modern, and West African. In Personal Development class, visual arts projects were displayed around the room as a group brainstorming session produced a list of constructive activities students could do outside of school hours to keep busy and stay focused. Creative Communication class featured a creative writing activity that introduced a structure for approaching any kind of writing assignments to help novice writers organize ideas and create a coherent piece of work.
The entire group ended the day in the Peacock Studio Theater with the AileyCamp Daily Affirmations. Feedback from parents and other visitors throughout the day was positive, with most people commenting on how impressed they were with the level of professionalism in which the camp is presented. From the fantastic facilities to first rate staff, happy parents congratulated the campers and the staff for a job well done.
In addition to family and friends, new media outlets including WLRN radio, NBC 4, the Miami Herald and the South Florida Times also spent time with AileyCampers, learning about their experience and ambitions.
AileyCamp Miami will finish with a bang as the campers will do a special final performance for the community that will take place this Saturday, August 8th at 7pm in the Knight Concerts Hall. This event is free and open to the public. For tickets call the Box Office at 305-949-6722 or visit the website at www.arshtcenter.org.
