A full house of gospel music lovers packed the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall on October 18th to kick off the 2009-2010 season of Free Gospel Sundays.  Produced in partnership with Gospel AM1490 WMBM and Jubilate, this series pairs gospel music’s top recording artists with Miami-Dade’s best and brightest choirs.

The concert opened with the premiere of a short documentary film entitled “Sunday’s Best”.  Inspired by Free Gospel Sundays and commissioned by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the film was created by two local filmmakers Marlon Johnson and Chad Tingle. The documentary explores the tradition of “crowns” and features women who wear extraordinary hats to church services on Sundays. Focusing on the tradition within Miami’s own black community, the film incorporates interviews, vintage and contemporary photography and, of course, gospel music. This documentary film is the first project inspired by an Adrienne Arsht Center-presented program.

The film was followed by a powerful performance from the stellar Cooper Temple Church of God in Christ Choir, based in Miami Gardens.  Led by Pastor Marc Cooper, the Choir sang songs from its soon to be released new album, “The Upper Room”.

The Adrienne Arsht Center’s very own Free Gospel Sundays Mass Choir took the stage next for a special set with guest artist Moses Tyson Jr., one of the greatest organ players in the field.  The choir then backed multi-award winning singer, CeCe Winans for the finale.  One of the most popular and influential artists working in contemporary gospel music, CeCe Winans graced the stage, bringing the crowd to its feet with an uplifting performance.

Free Gospel Sundays, generously supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, continues on December 6th, with gospel legend Richard Smallwood and Bethel Full Gospel Baptist Church

On February 21st, the Arsht Center pairs Mount Tabor Full Gospel Baptist Church with gospel music pioneers The Canton Spirituals.

The Free Gospel Sundays season then comes to a close on April 18th with the New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Choir and Grammy award winner Vanessa Bell Armstrong.
